i don't know the particulars of the power industry in the u.k. (such as whether the 'traditional' generators are subsidized), but while monbiot makes some valid points his conclusion seems flawed. it's less a question of whether to suasidize or not to subsidize, than one of how to structure the subsidy. also, until the externalized costs of fossil fuel- and extraction-based power generation are plugged into the equation, you can't fairly assess how much to subsidize alternative energy.
