Hi Zeke,
I know some people who keep bees in Switzerland at 900m (approx 3000 feet) and I've just contacted them to see if they are interested.
They're from Neuchatel and speak French rather than German. How's your French? If they're happy to talk to you I could be an intermediary if your French isn't up to it. I don't live far from the French-Swiss border and speak very good French.
Anyway, I'll let you know off-list if they're interested. Regards, David On 20/08/2014 04:34, sustainablelorgbiofuel-request wrote:

Message-ID: <CAFpyUpXwu7X61Egve_8=7t_+6whfq44ap-dy93fc5qxw_1c...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 I am trying to find out more about the beehouses used in Switzerland (and other mountainous regions in Europe). There's very little info on them here in the US, but the standard langstroth hive does not work as well in cold winter climates, from what I can gather. And, they require electric fences for any protection from bears, and even with them, bear invasions are common in the mountains. But, they're cheap... the US way of doing things. I am considering making a trip to Switzerland next summer to research these more and see how they function, however, I need to get some contacts there first and see if it's possible to set up a tour of beehouses, etc. My not speaking German is not helping the research ;) But, I figured this list might have some ideas. Thanks Zeke
