According to reports, three scientists from a university are involved in a study of impacts of potential oil spills in the Arctic. Experts have been observing it for more shipping in addition to oil exploration.

The University of Manitoba announced the Churchill Marine Observatory in April. The university is mainly carrying out the project that has 10 scientists from Canada. Recently, it received a federal grant of $32 million through the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

As per Casey Hubert, a biology professor at the U of C, it is a project about understanding the potential oil spills in the Arctic along with sea ice.

Hubert and two U of C geography professors, John Yackel and Brent Else, will make efforts to preserve Arctic ecosystems since cargo shipping adds to a changing climate. Lead researchers from the University of Manitoba will also be involved in this work.

According to them, the geography of the Arctic shows some distinctive challenges for oil spill detection, extraction and remediation, the areas that have not been researched thoroughly. According to Yackal, head of the geography department of the U of C, his work will concentrate on detecting oil in waters covered with ice.

He said that he will contribute by using satellite remote-sensing technologies to know about the oil spill in sea ice signatures. According to him, "It gets really messy and it will look and feel a lot different than a normal oil spill in the ocean. It will do different things within cold water and ice-covered waters than it would in the open ocean".
