Thanks, Michael.
As regular readers of the Sustainable Tompkins list know, TCLocal
(tclocal.org) has been working on the peak oil and energy descent
issue for about a year and a half now. The March 2007 report of
the City of Portland (OR) peak oil task force is both an
inspiration and a model for local energy descent plans everywhere,
and I urge everyone interested in our future to read it:

The Portland report was the assigned reading for this month's
meeting of the PostCarbon Ithaca discussion group, which got about
halfway through it and will be finishing up in its next regular
meeting 16 May.
Also interesting is the peak oil report prepared for the City of
Hamilton (ON), which came out a year ago:

The other recent big news in this area was the long-awaited release of
the report of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO):
http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d07283.pdf
The title of this last document says it all: "CRUDE OIL:
Uncertainty about Future Oil Supply Makes It Important to Develop
a Strategy for Addressing a Peak and Decline in Oil Production."
Links to these documents, together with the earlier SAIC report
for the U.S. DOE and a number of other energy descent resources,
can be found in the Library section of the tclocal.org site.
Copies of the three essential reports listed above were submitted
to the Tompkins County Planning, Development, and Environmental
Quality Committee in a presentation from TCLocal earlier this
month. It's to be hoped that continuing efforts to raise
awareness among Tompkins County planners regarding the need to
start planning for energy descent will eventually result in the
formation of a task force like Portland's. In the meantime,
TCLocal continues to research questions related to planning for
local energy descent and to give presentations on the subject to
interested groups in the county as well as providing input to
relevant local government agencies on the energy aspects of local
policy issues such as the Bolton Point water plant question. Any
group wishing to learn more about the energy challenges facing us
and current efforts to develop a plan to meet those challenges
should contact me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) to arrange a presentation.
