PERMACULTURE FUNDAMENTALS - NAPLES, NY
Sliding Scale $100 - 250

Spend a weekend learning the basics of permaculture design in a beutiful
spot in the Western Finger Lakes. Walk away with a toolbox of ecological
design principles after practice on sites at the Rochester Folk Art
Guild (www.rfag.org) This course is highly affordable and offers a
discussion on the ethics, attitudes, and principles of permaculture as
well as an exploration of natural ecology and pattern that lead to
regenerative designs.

See www.fingerlakespermaculture.org/fundamentals.htm for a schedule and
more details.

*ANNOUNCING ADVANCED PERMACULTURE DESIGN CERTIFICATION*

*June 13 - 23*
with Dave Jacke, Jono Neiger, and Darren Doherty

The Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute (FLPCI) invites all Permaculture
Design Certificate graduates to an exciting and unique event this summer
in Ithaca NY.

We will be developing a 5-year design for the Cayuga Nature Center's
semi-dormant farm property into a permaculture demonstration site.

The farm site, purchased by the Cayuga Nature Center (CNC) in 1991, has
since been used for horse stabling, goat raising, and a large scale
composting facility.

In early 2006, CNC partnered with FLPCI to assist creating a sustainable
design for the entire 130 property of the nature center and the farm.

The initial site assessment of the farm determined a number of issues
which inhibit sustainable use of the property. Foremost are the runoff
and drainage problems associated with compacted soil from many years of
conventional farming practices. Related problems include heavy erosion,
damage to buildings, and the silting of three ponds.

FLPCI is seeking graduates who would like to develop their design
literacy to spend ten days in a cooperative and intensive environment.
Students may join the entire course or attend either of the individual
classes. Advanced Design Certificates will be awarded by the Institute
and the instructors to students in attendance for the entire course

Below are schedules and details for the two design courses that will
address this process.

June 13 – 17
ADVANCED PERMACULTURE DESIGN SEMINAR
with
DAVE JACKE, educator, designer and author of Edible Forest Gardens
and JONO NEIGER, teacher and designer; Regenerative Designs, Inc.
http://www.edibleforestgardens.com

TUITION: Sliding Scale $350 - $450 ($850 including Keyline Design
Workshop) + food
PREREQUISITE: Permaculture Design Certificate

Participants will challenge and further develop their design process and
skills. We will consider the CNC farm project as a design problem to be
resolved through whole systems thinking. The course will be facilitated
with a charette-style approach.

Focus will be on the design process and how the provided goals,
assessment, and schematics relate. Do they support or contradict one
another? How might we develop the documents to reflect the complex needs
for the site and the people?

The systems we will design include earthworks, aquaculture, animal
forage, tree crops, coppice, and food production.

Seminar Goals:
1. Develop student confidence in their design process abilities
2. Actively engage class in a cooperative design charette leading to a
conclusive design.
3. Understand each piece of the design process
4. Focus on the challenges of specific patch designs

June 18 – 23
SOIL & WATER FOR EVERY FARM: KEYLINE DESIGN
with
DARREN DOHERTY, permaculture teacher, designer, developer, and manager
with extensive international experience in keyline design.
http://www.permaculture.biz

TUITION: $600 ($850 with Advanced Design Seminar) + food
PREREQUISITE: None

Build soil and store water in the land during an intensive blend of
technical & practical sessions targeted at professional land managers,
consultants, earthmovers, designers, farmers & others seeking in
practical & cost-effective landscape restoration strategies.

We hope to enable local and regional Permaculture Designers to broaden
and strengthen their business opportunities by adding rural design and
development services. This is also an opportunity for commercial farmers
and land owners to discover new methods and ideas to increase
productivity, build soil, and solve water issues.

Participants attending the workshop will gain the following outcomes:

1. Basic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
applications in developing Permaculture/Keyline Designs
2. Provision of Microsoft Excel-based Worksheet package for Client &
Project Management, Development and Management processes (see attached
.pdf file)
3. Base understanding of design and development principles involved with
Broadacre Permaculture & Keyline Design applications including:
- Whole Farm Planning/Property Management Planning
- Land Component identification and classification
- Earthworks & Soil Renovation techniques and machinery applications
- Use and development of land system-based standard designs
- Farm Forestry & Tree Crop ground preparation, management & processing
techniques
- Water Harvesting & Drought-proofing methods and applications
