My name is Matt Yaeger and I am an intern for Cornell Cooperative
Extension and Primitive Pursuits. As the summer begins to wind down,
there are many exciting opportunities on the way just in time for Fall. I
wanted to share such opportunities with anyone and everyone interested in
deepening their relationship with nature.
Primitive Pursuits is a nature awareness program/organization located in
Ithaca, NY. For almost 10 years now Primitive Pursuits has been engaging
participants' minds and hands in a collective pursuit of answers derived
only from the natural environment. Programs are designed to teach
participants primitive living skills such as making friction fires,
building survival shelters, identifying edible plants, tracking wildlife,
and other survival skills and practices. This organization is constantly
striving to create a strong community of naturalists of all ages and
backgrounds, and they are looking to expand their ties with other
like-minded individuals who are interested in sharing this vision.

... From Wilderness Survival to Community Survival...
It is deeply meaningful for me, the skills and ways of life you are
practicing and teaching. And Ive wanted to do this for a long while.
- Spring 2007 apprentice
Primitive Pursuits, a program in partnership with 4-H Youth Development
and Cornell Cooperative Extension, announces the 2007-2008 Wilderness
Awareness Apprenticeship. This nine-month program is designed to train
adult mentors in Naturalist Studies, Wilderness Survival skills, and
Community Building. The goal is to form a network of community leaders who
are empowered to bridge the growing divide between our modern culture and
the natural world that sustains us.

Program Structure:
Class Time - Each Friday the apprentice group will venture out with
Primitive Pursuits lead instructors and special guests to explore the vast
wild places and hidden urban corridors around Ithaca, NY. Well have some
discussion time and a lot of dirt time - practicing our core routines in
the field. Youll also work individually with the instructors on your own
learning path.
Youth Mentoring - Each week you will also team up with a staff member to
co-lead one of many weekly youth programs. You will explore your role as a
mentor and apply the skills you are learning in a meaningful context.
Together, this is a commitment of ten hours each week. We also strongly
encourage you to make additional time for practicing your skills and doing
research on you own.
Weekend Events - There are also four weekend skill intensives and five
weekend community events included in the program.
Course of Study:
During your time with us you will have the opportunity to learn about and
focus on skills in three areas. We call these skills our "core routines"
to acknowledge that they are not learned quickly, but rather through a
process of creating new patterns in our daily awareness and habits. They
will also be the core of our studies together.
