Finger Lakes Conference Links Health and Sustainability

A conference that links emerging public health issues and sustainable living
in the Finger Lakes region is now accepting registrations. The Health and
Sustainability Conference, an all-day event coming in mid-September, is
designed for health care professionals, as well as educators, building
managers, and
policy makers who are concerned about the rapidly changing health care
picture.

Escalating health problems include new global disease patterns,
environmental toxins, the obesity epidemic, untreated preventable diseases,
and the
stresses natural disasters put on our health care systems. Speakers,
consultants,
and exhibitors will present information on sustainable solutions such as
building healthy community infrastructures, improving nutrition, and greening
medical facilities.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jonathan Patz, of the University of Wisconsin and Johns
Hopkins University, will outline the health care threats of intensified
heatwaves, sprawl development, and chemical exposures and how to reduce these
risks by rethinking how we live and work. Patz is a leading researcher who has
briefed Congress on the health risks associated with climate change. Other
speakers include Dr. Sandra Steingraber, an environmental researcher, author,
and cancer survivor whose work is often compared to that of Rachel Carson. A
presentation of the national publication, "Green Guide to Health Care," will
focus on environmentally preferable purchasing, building design, and
operations
in a health care setting.

The regional conference will be held on September 15 at Ithaca College.
Organized by Sustainable Tompkins, the conference is sponsored by Ithaca
College
School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, with additional support from
the Park Foundation, Tompkins County Solid Waste Management Division,
NYSERDA, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, TC3 Department of Nursing, Cayuga
Medical
Center, Cayuga Radio Group, and Island Health and Fitness Center. For more
information and to register, contact the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce,
