Health & Sustainability Conference
Saturday, September 15, 10:30 am – 5 pm
Hill Center, Ithaca College
Sustainable Tompkins and Ithaca College are offering this one-time chance to
join your colleagues from across New York to explore the connections between
health, sustainable ways of living and working, and our economic viability.

The goal of the conference is to start a regional conversation between
health care providers, educators, elected officials, and local citizens about
how
to design our communities, workplaces, hospitals, schools, and homes in ways
that support our health. We need to do a better job of working together to
change the worrisome trends we face in obesity-related disease and exposure to
environmental toxins. We simply can’t afford the growing costs of these
epidemics.
The conference offers a multi-faceted approach to solving these problems.
Keynote speaker Dr. Jonathan Patz, a medical researcher from the University of
Wisconsin who has briefed Congress on the health threats of climate change,
will outline ways to reduce the risks associated with intensified heatwaves,
sprawl development, and chemical exposures. Three concurrent sessions will be
offered in the afternoon.
Facility staff and business managers will want to attend the Greening
Medical Facilities session to learn how to save money and protect building
occupants by greening their operations to reduce energy consumption, waste,
and
pollution.
-- Paul Levesque, Andrew Gil, and Stephen Beck, LEED-accredited
professionals, will discuss ways to design, build and retrofit greener health
care
facilities for cost savings and improved productivity.
--Russell Mankes, of Albany Medical College, will show proven ways to reduce
hazardous medical waste and save on disposal fees.
-- Marie Kulick, leader of a program in the Midwest that brings
locally-grown and organic foods to patient rooms and cafeterias, will present
a
nationally-recognized program on healthier food for care facilities.
Elected officials, planners, and physicians will want to attend the Healthy
Communities session:
-- Sandra Steingraber, an environmental researcher, author, and cancer
survivor whose work is often compared to that of Rachel Carson, will talk
about
ways to reduce toxins in our environment.
-- Michael J. Ball, Director of Planning and Implementation for the Buffalo
Niagara Medical Campus, will present a case study on how a healthy
infrastructure can lead to a healthier population.
Health educators and policymakers charged with addressing our complex public
health problems will want to sign up for a session on using systems thinking
in public health:
--Derek Cabrera, visiting fellow at Cornell University and founder of
ThinkWorks, will share ideas about using systems thinking and modeling in the
health care field.
-- Philip Haberstro, CEO of the Wellness Institute of Buffalo and Western
New York, will discuss cross-sector strategic actions for creating community
health and wellbeing.
-- Shira Adriance, Whole Project Community Coordinator for Cornell
Cooperative Extension, will discuss ways communities can help combat childhood
obesity
by engaging all the influential actors in children’s lives.
-- Geoffrey Moore, director of the Cayuga Center for Healthy Living, will
talk about how to integrate good health into personal lifestyles.
Registration is $30 per person, which includes networking sessions,
opportunities to meet with consultants, lunch, exhibits, and a dessert
reception. The
conference is open to all, and interested citizens are welcome to attend.
