Can anyone recommend a local or area artist who could
anchor a community workshop to create a "Trashasaurus"
sculpture for Earth Day next April?
The "Trashasaurus" - or "Scrapzilla" - phenomenon
emerged in the early 1990s, when a group of Indiana
artists created the first sculpture - a huge dinosaur
made of plastic bottles and other trash - to protest a
US Court ruling prohibiting Indiana's effort to ban
importation of solid wastes from other states.
Since then it has spread around the world, spawning
T-young both big and small, made by schoolchildren and
artists alike. The goal in all cases is to bring the
need for recycling to public attention - in the
context of creating a sustainable world. If you google
"trashasaurs", you'll find 850 sites with images,
instructions, and inspiring stories from around the
globe.
Thanks for your suggestions of local artists who might
be interested in working with school kids and families
to construct our very own T-Rex for '08 -
- fostering social, economic and environmental justice through collaborative
initiatives in hospitality, education and the arts, in the 150 year-old
democratic community spirit of the Danish Folk School
