More on the keynote speaker ELIZABETH HENDERSON:
Elizabeth is a veteran food activist and New York state organic farmer for
over 26 years. She wrote Sharing the Harvest: A Citizen's Guide to Community
Supported Agriculture (Chelsea Green, 1999, 2007) and edited The Real Dirt:
Farmers Tell About Organic and Low-Input Practices in the Northeast (1994).
For many years, she has served on the board of the Northeast Organic Farming
Association (NOFA) and acted as their representative in efforts to maintain
the integrity of organic standards and resist the industrialization of
organic agriculture. Recently, she has turned her attention to creating the
Agricultural Justice Project, "For All Who Labor in Agriculture." Local fair
trade, dignity, negotiated contracts for farmers, safe working conditions
and a living wage for farmers and farm workers are just a few of the
criteria for this compelling model for local agriculture.
More on the AGRICULTURAL JUSTICE PROJECT:
The immediate goal of the AJP is to create universal social standards for
sustainable and organic agriculture; to codify in concrete terms what
making a legitimate claim of "social justice" means. AJP partners knew that
such a claim would be a powerful tool in the marketplace, and would need to
be backed up by strong standards and a reliable verification system.

More on Living Wage:
Living wage is a term used by advocates to refer to the minimum hourly wage
necessary for a person to achieve some specific standard of living. In the
context of developed countries this standard generally means that a person
working forty hours a week, with no additional income, should be able to
afford a specified quality or quantity of housing, food, utilities,
transport, health care, and recreation. This concept differs from the
minimum wage in that the latter is set by law and may fail to meet the
requirements of a living wage.
