I was very moved by Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech this week. My friend Piper says it as well as I could, so I am sending you his letter urging us to sign a petition supporting Al Gore as he addresses the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali.

At his request, I've signed an important petition showing I support his urgent call for a visionary treaty to address the climate crisis. The world's elected leaders must take the steps necessary to solve global warming. It's not too late. We have the opportunity now to improve the Earth's future for our children, and their children. If we don't act, we will only have ourselves to blame. Could you please take a look at the petition and consider signing it today?: http://www.climateprotect.org/standwithal Will you please also consider adding a personal message to your petition signature? All solutions to climate change will involve each of us making some unique personal contribution. Our own thoughts and feelings about the future of the Earth are important. We should look for opportunities to share them with our families and friends. Networking is vital: if you consider this petition campaign important enough to participate yourself, please also encourage family members and friends to get on board. This is the personal message that I am sending to Bali with my signature: The refusal of the United States to accept moral responsibility for the consequences of its rampant consumerism is one of the greatest ethical transgressions in recent history. The solutions to the climate change dilemma will have to involve not just brilliant technological innovations but also a deep change of consciousness in the world's richest nations. The Earth cannot sustainably support the extravagant and wasteful life styles that so many North Americans and Western Europeans have come to consider "normal." Undoubtedly someone somewhere will think this is high handed and preachy of me. Tuff for them (and their Hummer and their five-bedroom MacMansion and their yearly ski vacations in the Swiss Alps). With each other's inspiration and creative tips, we can learn to live rich and meaningful lives without the ridiculous glut of material attributes that are such a burden to the Earth. Best wishes, Piper _______________________________________________ RSS, archives, subscription & listserv information for: [email protected] http://lists.mutualaid.org/mailman/listinfo/sustainabletompkins free hosting by http://www.mutualaid.org
