Dear Elan and Friends--I think the HSC list and the rules they operate on
are great, for their type of list. They have an announcement-oriented list
and the subscribers do not discuss topics or issues, which is good, given
the type of list it is. Almost all of their rules are applicable to the ST
list as well, however, as I stated in an earlier post today, and as others
have stated repeatedly as well, I think is critical that we develop as much
dialogue around sustainability and related issues as possible. This is I
feel the most beneficial and constructive function of the ST list. Most of
us can't meet face to fact to discusses these issues so an electronic forum
like the ST list is vital as far as I'm concerned.

Another issue is that there are less than 300 subscribers to this list and
there are c. 110,000 people in Tompkins County. So the list is a tiny,
minuscule, self-supporting group of folks with common interests. I try to
tell as many people about the ST list as possible, hoping that we can grow
the sustainability community using the list as a vehicle to do so. My
$.02. Tom

MY NOTE: Sustainable development does not mean "sustainable growth" as
growth per se is not sustainable. And the term "sustainable" has to mean
"for a very long time" (A. Bartlett).
