You need to start scouring the farm auctions. I'm sure that hand operated
threshers did exist into the 50s and 60s.

They may well still be manufactured and marketed to PA German Plain Sect
farmers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and now our own Finger Lakes region, or
there is a used equipment market for them.

I've been away from the farm too long to offer any further immediate help.

I'm researching production of flax seed on small scale (about an acre
between our house and a new pond we are putting in this spring)- we
like the way it looks/flowers as part of the landscape and think it
would be neat to harvest the seed for food use- throw on cereal, mix in
with fruit and yogurt, etc.
* I've purchased "Small Scale Grain Raising" by Gene Logsdon and
cant wait to get this from Amazon where I bought used copy. Any other
books, articles you may think of would be appreciated
* Found small scale (4,5 or 6 ft wide) no till grain drill I can
use with my tractor which I will probably buy and can use to plant
switchgrass, prariegrass, clover, rotation grain crops for the flax
seed, etc. Ferrari Tractors in California- Eugene Conales phone 530
846 6401 PO Box 1045 Gridley, CA 95948. Nice man, works with people
doing agriforestry, organic farming.
* Trouble comes at harvest time. No small scale combines or
threshers If anyone knows of used small scale harvesting equipment I'd
greatly appreciate the lead. Ann and I will start by hand scythe,
flail bundles over a log onto a tarp to collect the seed. Any tips here
would be appreciated. As we mainly want the ground cover/blue flowers ,
harvesting is not such a big deal we'll just do enough for our and
neighbors' consumption. We are definitely not looking to sell seed.

Thanks much,
John
