THE GREAT CAROLINE BAG PROJECT
SewGreen has taken on a challenge to sew 1,200 reusable bags for Energy
Independent Caroline by the end of March 2008. With the help of Cornell
University students, each bag will be filled with a free compact fluorescent
light bulb and literature on sustainable living. A bag will be distributed to
every household in the town of Caroline, NY. SewGreen earns $1 for every
completed bag, and we will donate a percentage to the local Shopping Bag Action
Group. Precut fabric will be available at the SewGreen Studio at Tuff Soul, 516
West State Street, Ithaca. We are holding a sew-in at the studio on the weekend
of March 15 and 16. Instructions for making the bag -- which must be
constructed of all reused materials -- are posted on the SewGreen website,
www.sew-green.org. Help us meet our quota and contribute to three great green
programs! Contact Wendy, [EMAIL PROTECTED] for more information on the bags,
the sew-in, and how you can help.

SEW & TELL, MARCH 5
Come to the March 5 Sew & Tell, which focuses on -- what else? -- reusable tote
bags. Andria Auerell will host. Here's what she wrote: "Show us the reusable
bags you have or make! Avoiding plastic and paper bags in favor of reusable
cloth bags is a great way to reuse a variety of materials that would otherwise
be wasted. Bring something you've made or an example of a bag you'd like to
make. We'll have an example of the bags that SewGreen has been challenged to
make for Energy Independent Caroline and will provide a free instruction sheet
for this simple tote. All topics surrounding reusable bags are up for
discussion. What do YOU carry in your cloth bag? 6 - 8 pm, Wednesday, March 5,
SewGreen Studio at Tuff Soul, 516 West State Street, Ithaca. Free and open to
all."

GREEN T CONTEST UPDATE
Winners of the Green T reuse design contest will be announced on March 10. Many
of the fashions will be modelled at the Ithaca Earth Day celebration at the
Farmers' Market pavilion on Sunday, April 27, and also at Ithaca Festival.
SewGreen will have a gallery exhibit the first two weeks of April at the
Community School of Music and Art, featuring the best reuse fashions and home
furnishings from the contest.

NATURAL DYES, MARCH 22
Ruby Turner, who has worked with natural dyes in New Mexico and now in Ithaca,
will present an overview of the techniques of natural dyeing with a special
emphasis on dyeing wool fibers. Topics will include: kinds and sources of
natural dyes; earth-friendly mordents (used to make the dyes colorfast);
preparation of wool yarn for dyeing; and dyeing procedures. She will also
discuss the dyeing of other fibers, such as silk and cotton. Ruby will bring
samples so participants can see the beautiful colors that result from these
techniques, and she can answer questions about your dyeing projects. The event
will be held at the SewGreen Studio from 1 - 3 pm, Saturday, March 22.
Pre-registration and a fee of $5 are requested. Please call Wendy at
607-277-7611 to reserve a spot.

NEED FABRIC? GET IT ON THE CHEAP
SewGreen maintains a display of reused fabric of all kinds (actually, most of
it is brand-new and has never been used) at the SewGreen Studio at Tuff Soul.
We also have knitting and sewing supplies, trims, buttons, etc., at very
affordable prices. Proceeds of the sales go to support SewGreen programming and
classes.

SUPPORT SEWGREEN
You can help SewGreen grow with your donations of time, talent, and stuff.
Volunteers are needed to help cut, sort, and price fabric; help with planning
and coordination; teach classes; work on sewing machines; address thank-you
cards etc. Donations of fabric, yarns, older sewing machines, and needlecraft
supplies are always welcome. Contact Wendy [EMAIL PROTECTED] for guidelines.
