Subject: Sister2sister Goes Green, March 29

Sister2Sister -- an annual event that attracts about 80 middle school age girls
and 40 or so high school mentors and adult volunteers -- has chosen
sustainability as its 2008 theme. The organizers are also instituting green
practices, such as aiming for zero waste, serving local and organic foods,
reducing use of paper, etc. that will continue in following years.

Event for Middle School Girls March 29

On Saturday March 29, middle school girls from throughout the Ithaca area are
invited to participate in "sister2sister2008". This is the eighth annual event
and each has brought about 70 girls to the Women's Community Building in
downtown Ithaca for a day of special activities designed for them.

Girls who participated in the past events reported that they had a lot of fun
while they were doing the interesting and inspirational activities. This
year's sister2sister theme is “Girls Growing Up Green”. It will run from 9:30
a.m.-3:30 p.m.

After hearing a presentation by biologist and author Sandra Steingraber:
“Living Downstream-Saving the Environment, Saving Ourselves”, high school age
girls will guide the middle school girls as they rotate to several small group
activities. Local professionals oriented the high school mentors for their
role.

"ReMake a Tee: T-shirt Refashioning Workshop" is one of the workshops all girls
will attend in morning or afternoon. It will be lead by Wendy Skinner of
SewGreen, an Ithaca-based group that promotes reuse and sustainability in
sewing. Girls can make a tote bag, a skirt, or cool new top using just scissors
and unwanted t-shirts.

There will be a lunch break and the "Love Your Body Fair". It will feature such
things as hair braiding, massage, face-painting and information on healthy
lifestyles.

Girls will participate in two other workshops as well as spending time with
their mentors . Susannah Berryman of Ithaca College’s Theatre Arts Department
will lead the girls in creative and physical movement activities. Caren Cooper
of the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology is offering a workshop called
“Standing Tall in Small Footprints”.

The American Association of University Women and the Women’s Community Building
with numerous community organizations sponsor this program that features
"enjoyment, education and empowerment" for girls. Other partners are Family and
Children’s Service, Tompkins County Solid Waste, SewGreen, Planned Parenthood
of the Southern Finger Lakes, Ithaca College Women’s Studies, Cornell
Cooperative Extension, Cornell Family Life Development Center, Ithaca College,
Sustainable Tompkins, Ithaca College Theater Arts, Cornell Lab of Ornithology,
Advocacy Center, Ithaca Youth Bureau, Tompkins Community Action, Cornell
University Engineering Diversity Programs, Sunset Design, Megaphone Media,
Tompkins Weekly, Cayuga Compost, Greenstar Cooperative, and the Triad
Foundation.

Girls and parents who want to inquire about the program and registration can
check with their school guidance office. Information is also available at the
Women's Community Building, on the web site <www.s2sithaca.org> , by calling
280-4380 or emailing [EMAIL PROTECTED] Registration forms and a $5.00 fee are
encouraged by March 24. Fee waivers can be requested.

A free morning segment for adults (parents, teachers, counselors, friends) will
also be offered. No registration is needed for this component featuring Dr.
Jane Powers of the Family Life Development Center at Cornell. She will discuss
“Helping Our Daughters Grow: How You Can Be An Asset Builder”.
