With 300 Completed, the Caroline Bag Sew-In Continues

Participants in a sustainable sew-in made 180 reusable bags this past weekend.
The two-day sew-in, held at SewGreen in Ithaca, was part of an effort to make
1,200 of the tote bags, which will be distributed throughout the town of
Caroline in mid-April. Each tote bag is made from reused fabric and each is
unique. Counting bags made at home by community members, about 300 have been
completed, says SewGreen Coordinator Wendy Skinner.

The Caroline community is also hosting a sew-in to help reach the goal.
Organized by Caroline resident Pat Brhel, the sew-in will be held 2 - 6 pm,
Saturday, March 22, at the Brooktondale Community Center, 522 Valley Road,
Brooktondale. Materials and sewing machines will be supplied, and participants
are invited to bring their own machines, as well. Anyone who sews or wants to
sew is welcome, says Brhel.

Cornell University students will work with Caroline residents to give away one
compact fluorescent light bulb, tucked into a reusable bag along with
literature on energy efficiency and sustainable living. The bag and bulb
distribution project is intended to raise awareness of reuse and energy
savings. Cornell student Shawn Lindabury, who first had the idea and won grant
funds for the project, has teamed with Energy Independent Caroline and SewGreen
for the town/gown collaboration.
