from a fellow sustainability educator with tremendous vision and dedication:

Dear Sustainable Tompkins network,

As you may have heard, there is a growing movement in Ithaca to create a
small public high school for sustainability education. It now has a
name - New Roots School - and a web site! Please visit our web site for more
information:

www.newrootsschool.org

As we complete the charter application process, we are gathering
expressions of community support for the school to demonstrate its
viability as a public institution. We have been gratified by how
widespread this support has been so far. I invite you to add your voice
if you feel so moved. The web site offers support for doing so in a
number of ways, including information about where to sign our petition and
sample letters that you can use to compose a letter as a parent, and/or as
a member of an organization or profession about ways you envision being
involved in or supporting the school.

I am thinking about the latter especially as I write to you, as
demonstrating that a wide variety of community organizations are
interested in working with our students will be crucial to Albany's
assessment of our program. Time is short—- we are collecting letters and
signatures by May 20, so please take a few minutes as soon as you're able.
Signed letters may be sent via email as pdf files if that's easiest for
you; the web site offers more information about how.

I hope you share our excitement about what we might do together, and how
young people might both learn from your work and support the realization
of your visions. I am excited at the potential for young people to be a
catalyst for our sustainability movement locally. It's a significant
opportunity for both personal and community transformation. No one of us
can make this happen alone, but together, we can be a powerful force.
Please join us in letting Albany know that Ithaca wants New Roots!

Inspired by your work,

Tina Nilsen-Hodges
for the growing New Roots Charter School community
