Hi folks (apologies to those outside the 51st State Senate District in New
York, but there may still be reason for your looking on!):

While I don't usually recommend candidates, I believe that our State government
is in need of desperate change. As you may/may not be aware, the New York State
government is dangerously close to a Democratic majority through and through.

At this point, only a couple of seats in the Senate keep it from a full
Democratic majority. In our immediate area, Tompkins County, we have three of
the most conservative Republican State Senators (Winner, Nozzolio, and Seward).
Three years ago, Seward was one of *five* State Senators to *vote against* a
minimum wage increase (which we successfully won). We are fortunate that *this
year* we have a local guy, Don Barber (presently Town Supervisor for Caroline),
and founder of a Living Wage-Certified Employer, with the courage to go up
against longtime Republican Senator, Jim Seward.

I can heartily recommend Don as someone to work for, either as a volunteer, or
financially. It is important that we get behind people who, especially in rural
areas, are pushing for progressive change!
In solidarity
Pete

The following message is from Don's campaign directed to those interested
especially in economic justice and sustainability issues:

Do you believe workers deserve the right to unionize and provide for
their families?

Do you believe everyone should have access to affordable quality health care?

Do you believe we must work towards economic and environmental sustainability?

Don Barber believes we must work towards all of these goals and much more. Don
Barber believes we must act now to create a strong future for our children.

This year we can elect DON BARBER, and HELP ELECT A STRONG SUPPORTER OF
WORKER’S RIGHTS! Check out www.barberforsenate.com for more information on the
Barber Campaign. Don is the Democratic candidate in the 51st Senate district.
He's running strong but needs our help against 22-year incumbent Jim Seward.

Don is a farmer, a small business owner, and a 6 term Town Supervisor. He has
owned and operated a small residential construction firm for 25 years which
earned the recognition as a Living Wage Employer in Tompkins County. He has
just recently completed a 5 year transition selling the company to two
employees. Don is on the Board of Directors of the Tompkins County Area
Development and the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, as well as the
past Chair of the Tompkins County Council of Governments. As a Town Supervisor
and community leader Don has actively worked to provide citizens and employees
with the basic rights they deserve.

Don is committed to improving the wages, benefits and working conditions of
workers. He believes that a living wage should be the standard wage and
employees should be provided a basic number of vacation, sick and personal
hours per year. Don supports single-payer health care and believes that
everyone in NY State should have access to affordable quality health care. He
also believes the right to join a union is fundamental to a free society.
Workers must have the right to organize and should not be penalized for
choosing to do so.

AS A NY STATE SENATOR DON WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THE WORKING PEOPLE OF NEW YORK
A PRIORITY.

Don also believes in supporting the local economy by buying local. We must
work towards energy independence through energy conservation and development of
alternative energy sources. As Town Supervisor Don led the Town of Caroline to
become the second municipality in the state to get 100% of its energy from
alternative sources.

Barber to the Senate!
