Hello,

It was wonderful to attend the Sustainable Tompkins picnic today. What a
treat. Good food, music, people, ideas and a very low footprint event thanks
to using washable plates, cups and utensils.

Festivals have an enormous potential for waste. The Ithaca Festival has done
a great job in reducing waste by increasing composting and recycling
efforts. Scott Hamilton, an Ithaca Festival organizer who was at the picnic,
estimates a need for filling 250 - 3 hour "green-up" crew shifts throughout
the 4 day event.

This is a great opportunity to "walk the walk" that we like to talk. So many
people are amazed that their paper plates, paper cups, "plastic" utensils
and "plastic" cups made of potato or corn can be composted. Heck, some
people haven't even embraced composting vegetable scraps.

Keeping the festival green will be a challenge. However, it's been said that
a challenge is just an opportunity in disguise. Volunteer to help green the
festival by filling out the simple volunteer form at
http://www.ithacafestival.org <http://www.ithacafestival.org/> and check
the box for Green-up team.

This year's Ithaca Festival is larger than ever, and if you have friends or
family who have asked you how they can help green the planet, please refer
them to the web site to sign up. It's a perfect way to think globally and
act locally. Reach out and "teach" someone.

And, of course, there are many other opportunities to volunteer at the
festival from bicycle valet parking to helping with the Guinness book world
record largest human peace sign.

A few volunteer orientation parties will be held. Please mark your calendars
for one of the following dates: Friday June 13, Tuesday June 17, or
Wednesday June 18 to join the Ithaca Festival volunteer coordinators for
some socializing, refreshments, and detailed information about individual
and team volunteer opportunities. The meetings will be at the new Ithaca
Festival office location off the main atrium in Center Ithaca from 5:30-7:00
PM. These orientations are not mandatory, but your attendance would be
beneficial.

If you have any questions, you can email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you!
