Dear Liz and Friends--Check out http://www.slateroofcentral.com/. I don't have a specific contractor to recommend, but see http://www.slateroofers.org/directory.html for a list by state. Joseph Jenkins firm (first link) is very good. They are probably all expensive, especially if there is no local firm and you are paying for gas for them to drive to work as part of their costs. But if you look around you might get lucky and find a local firm that does good work for cheap. I know that there is a lot of historical house work being done in Owego. Is there a lock historical society? Perhaps they can refer you to firm(s) that they use and can provide references as well. Good luck with your project.
