25th Annual Labor Day Picnic in Ithaca, Monday, September 1st from 11-3
The Tompkins County Workers' Center and the Midstate Central Labor Council,
AFL-CIO invite the community to the free 25th Annual Labor Day Picnic at
Stewart Park on September 1st, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year marks the first
time that the Workers' Center and the Labor Council are sponsoring the
traditional Labor Day celebration in full partnership to honor and recognize
all workers.
For twenty-four years, this Labor Day event has brought hundreds of
workers, their families, and community members together for a day of
fun and celebration in recognition of the sacrifices and contributions
working people make to our communities every day.
The public is invited and
each family is asked to bring a dish to pass to complement the free
meat and veggie burgers, hot dogs, beverages, and ice cream. There will
be games for the kids and everyone can enjoy listening to the band, Thousands
of One, plus labor
songs performed by local folksingers Colleen Kattau, Tom Sieling and
John Simon. Area merchants are generously donating gift
certificates and merchandise that will be raffled off during the
picnic.
The annual awards have become a highlight of the Labor Day Picnic over
the years, and this year will be no different. The Mother Jones and Joe
Hill
awards are presented to people for their activism, organizing, and
sacrifice at work. The Friend of Labor award is presented to a member
of the community who has spoken out publicly or taken action in support
of working people. The notorious Goat of Labor goes to an especially
egregious offender of workers’ rights.
Raffle tickets ($1 each) for a 50/50 raffle are available in advance at the
Workers'
Center, 115 The Commons, Ithaca (above Autumn Leaves Used Books),
269-0409. Organizations interested in setting up an Organizing Table at the
event are welcome to contact the Workers' Center for details.
