To all concerned about all the garbage trucks coming in from all directions and
dumping trash at the big landfill in Seneca Falls, check this out: "Haulers
from 33 counties, neighboring states and Canada bring in about 2,200 tons of
trash on a typical day."

The Zero Waste Coalition -- a group of concerned citizens based in Geneva who
mobilized to address this problem -- just sent me the article. Here it is, with

Ontario County ponders $100M garbage plant
James Goodman . Staff writer . April 2, 2009

a.. Disposal of garbage and recycling are done in a big way in little Ontario
County.

Now a proposal for a pilot waste-to-fuel program at the Ontario County Landfill
could pave the way for a $100 million facility. Supporters say the proposal
could put the county on the map.

Opponents warn that the county would be creating a chronic source of
environmental problems.

County lawmakers will discuss the proposal at their meeting tonight. The
project still needs permits from the state Department of Environmental
Conservation. Public dollars would not be spent directly on the pilot, although
monitoring the project could cost taxpayers $70,000.

The landfill in the town of Seneca has become a regional center for trash and
recycling ever since Casella Waste Systems was hired by Ontario County to run
it five years ago. Haulers from 33 counties, neighboring states and Canada
bring in about 2,200 tons of trash on a typical day.
