TCAction is embarking on a year of intensive consumer energy outreach; which
includes door to door outreach, mailings and energy savings paid and earned
media. Our hope is to pique interest by providing information and solutions
without overwhelming the consumer. We would like to start a *simple
*conversation
with consumers that will lead to an expanded comprehensive conversation, and
ultimately energy savings action.

We would appreciate your participation in our “message” polling, below, for
our door to door outreach.

Our assumption is we have approximately 3 seconds to grab the consumer at
the door, and have tried to pick areas of interest to many.

We are inviting input from over 110 people in varying professions – we would
appreciate your response by June 18.

Many Thanks!

Stacey Murphy

Door knock materials, and scripts for outreach workers to use, have been
created for *Energy Savings/Saving Energy* to achieve 3 goals:

1. The “whole home” approach identifying components where efficiencies can
be made

2. A set of issues that relate to each component

3. A set of solutions in each component that range from large investment to
no cost.

1). Do these 5 areas resonate with you as components for whole home energy
savings?

          Electricity, Heating, Water, Drafts, and Appliances.

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

2). Do these 3 questions resonate with you as issues relating to *electrical
* efficiency?

          A. Do you think your electric bills are too high?

          B. Do you use compact fluorescent bulbs?

          C. Have you heard of phantom loads?

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

* *

* *

3). Do these 3 suggestions resonate with you as electrical efficiency
solutions that also range in cost?

A. Just like Mom & Dad said – “turn off that light”. One 100-watt bulb left
on overnight costs $25 per year.

B. CFL’s can save $15.00 a year per bulb.

C. Many household items use electricity when plugged in but are turned off –
Unplug!

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

4) Do these 3 questions resonate with you as *issues *relating to
*heating*efficiency?

A. Do you use space heaters?

          B. Do you leave your heat on when you’re at work?

C. When was the last time you had your heating system serviced?

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

* *

* *

5) Do these 3 suggestions resonate with you as *heating* *solutions* that
also range in cost?

A. Space heaters use a lot of energy and older ones can be dangerous.
Turn it off when you sleep, and if you must use one, make sure it meets the
latest safety standards. An energy audit can help you identify other ways to
make your home warmer so you don’t need it any more.

B. You can save up to $180 per year when you install a programmable
thermostat to

       automatically turn down the heat when you’re not at home.

C. To maximize efficiency and detect any potential problems have your
furnace

serviced once a year. The cost varies depending on your system and some
programs might be able to help.

* *

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

6) Do these 3 questions resonate with you as *issues* relating to *water*usage?

A. Do you run out of hot water while in the shower?

B. Have you ever carried two, one gallon jugs of water? That’s how much
water is used per minute by a standard faucet.

C. Which uses more water, hand washing or a dishwasher?

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

7) Do these 3 suggestions resonate with you as *water* *solutions* that also
range in cost?

A. If you do run out of hot water, it may be time to have your water
heater serviced or replaced.

B. Use a low-flow aerator to reduce your usage by 50% and cut down your
water bill. They cost about $3 and are easy to install.

          C. Studies show that dishwashers use less water than hand
washing. Scrape (don’t

                     rinse) the dishes before you put them in the
dishwasher.

* *

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

8) Do these 3 questions resonate with you as *issues* relating to
*drafts*and insulation?

A. Do you really need new windows?

B. Does your home feel drafty?

C. Do some rooms in your house feel colder than others?

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

9) Do these 3 suggestions resonate with you as *draft solutions* that also
range in cost?

A. Instead of replacing your windows, install caulk and weather-stripping
around your windows to keep warm air from leaking out and cold air from
coming in.

B. Sealing gaps and other air leakage spots around doors, windows,
basements and attics can reduce your energy costs and make you more
comfortable.

C. Combined with air-sealing, insulating walls and attics can reduce your
heating and cooling bills by up to 20%.

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

10) Do these 3 questions resonate with you as *issues *relating to *
appliances* and energy usage?

          A. Do you hear your refrigerator running all the time?

          B. Is your window air conditioner installed properly?

          C. Is your clothes washer over 10 years old?

* *

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*

11) Do these 3 suggestions resonate with you as solutions that also range
in cost?

A. Refrigerators built before 1994 use twice as much energy as newer ENERGY
STAR models. TCAction can help you determine if you qualify to get an
ENERGY STAR replacement for free or at a 50% savings.

          B. If your A/C unit is not installed tightly cool air can escape
from your home. Also, try using a fan first, they don’t use as much energy.

          C. Models made before 1999 use 30% more energy than newer
models. Be sure to wash only full loads and use an extra spin cycle to
reduce energy use while drying.

*Yes________  No________*

*If No – what would you include/omit?_______________________________*
