FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
International Artist to Anchor Ithaca Hiroshima Day Ceremony
On Thursday, August 6th, the Level Green Institute, West Danby’s Land of Dawes
and Catholic Charities’ Peace and Justice Ministry will co-host ceremonies at
12:15 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. in downtown Ithaca’s DeWitt Park to honor the spirit
of Hiroshima, Japan, and the continuing search for peace and reconciliation
that Hiroshima Day represents.
The noontime ceremony will feature reflections by artist James Fuhrman, whose
“Hiroshima Ghosts”(concrete and stainless steel sculpture, 6x3 ½’) is part of
the Downtown Ithaca Alliance’s annual outdoor art exhibition, Art in the Heart
of the City. Fuhrman’s work reflects the 2009 theme of “Art for a Just and
Sustainable Community”.
Known internationally for creation of contemplative spaces and evocation of
deep geologic time, Fuhrman’s three-part installation “Hiroshima Ghosts”,
“Communion Stones” and contemplative bench invite DeWitt Park visitors to
“pause and listen to the quiet…so that we can begin to make sense of
ourselves.” And, in the case of Hiroshima Day, of our deeply troubled world.
The individual elements of HIROSHIMA GHOSTS are the remaining shadows or ghosts
-- of the fabrication process-- from other works. The title references the
shadows of human forms remaining on the walls in Hiroshima after the atomic
bomb explosion vaporized the people standing near a wall. The metal work was in
fact completed on August 6, 1991.
Fuhrman will collaborate with local musicians incorporating the sculpture
into their music for a unique “sound art” experience echoing his collaboration
with Japan’s Toshi Makihara in 2008. <jfuhrman.com>
From 6:00-8:00 p.m., with the Thursday Farmers Market in the background, the
Fuhrman installation will be the site of a Quaker-style candlelit vigil.
Debaura Dahl of the Land of Dawes will open with a brief ceremony honoring all
those who have given their lives in wars and conflicts across the planet.
Participants of all ages are invited to light a candle and speak, read poems or
offer music as they wish.
The event is free and open to the public. For information contact Patricia
