SPEAKER: Miguel Gómez, Professor of Applied Economics and Management, Cornell University

DATE: Wednesday, September 30
TIME: 12:20 - 1:10 p.m.

Professor Gómez will discuss the challenges of assessing sustainability of a food system, given the multidimensional nature of the concept. He will use several examples to illustrate tradeoffs between variables relevant to food system sustainability and conclude with a brief description of the newly created Sustainable Food Systems Research group at Cornell. Miguel Gómez holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá) and a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Consumer Economics from the University of Illinois. Prior to joining Cornell, he was a faculty member at the University of Illinois. Consequently, his areas of expertise focus on marketing, price analysis and applied industrial organization. His current research focuses on sustainability of food supply chains, the economics of locally produced specialty crops, contracts between food suppliers and supermarkets, price analysis, and market power in food distribution channels.
