Dear Friends,

We'd like to invite you to our third annual "Friends of Greensprings" picnic on October 10th at 12:00 p.m. at Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve. (Sorry for cross-postings!)

As always, we'll provide the food. You can rely on us for delicious hot soup, casseroles, warm-out-of-the-oven bread, and more. (We've never objected, though, when people have brought food to share.) After an update and time to chat, we'll lead informal walks (starting at 12:45) around the property and--depending on interest--a "what is that tree?" walk in our woods.

And if it rains? It would take some pretty serious rain to put us off. So if it's raining only lightly, pull on your slicker and your rubber boots and come on out. (Boots are always recommended for our uneven terrain, especially considering how wet a year it's been.) Keep in mind that it gets a good deal cooler on our hilltop than in the valleys near the lake. Bring warm clothes.

While this is a great time to see Greensprings and, if planning ahead seems like a good idea to you, getting impressions about where you'd like your site to be, it's not the best time to choose one. Our events are usually busy times and all the trustees want to be available to talk with everyone and lead tours.

We've stayed busy this past year, though (as always) we could always do more. We've sold more than 300 sites and had nearly 50 burials. Whether it's the loveliness of the setting, the simplicity of burial at Greensprings, religious beliefs, or affordability, families come away glad they've chosen Greensprings.

We're grateful for your interest and support and look forward to picnicking with you. Directions are below.

Very truly yours,

The Greensprings Board of Trustees
Carl Leopold, Dick Cahoon, Steve Lawrence, Priscilla Quirk, John Rogers, Susan Thomas, and Mary Woodsen
and
Executive Director Joel Rabinowitz and Burial Coordinator Jennifer Johnson

Directions:

From Ithaca: Take Route 13 south (Elmira Road out of Ithaca). Drive about 4.5 miles from city limits (near entrance to Buttermilk Falls). (Follow sign for Elmira (right lane) where Route 13 splits from Routes 34 & 96.) At sign for Newfield, turn left. Turn right on Main Street. 1/4 mile south of village, bear left on Van Kirk Road. Continue south 4 miles; where Van Kirk bends nearly 90 degrees to left, slow down, then go straight onto Irish Hill Road. Continue 1.2 mile to Greensprings.

From I-86 (Elmira or Corning), also NYS Route 17: Take Exit 54, State Route 13 north, about 19 miles. Look for signs for Trumbull Corners Road. (This intersection should be about 7 miles after the Rt. 13-Rt. 224 crossroad.) Turn right at Trumbull Corners Road. At stop sign, turn right. Take first left turn, onto Van Kirk Road. Continue south 4 miles; where Van Kirk bends nearly 90 degrees to left, slow down, then go straight onto Irish Hill Road. Continue 1.2 mile to Greensprings.

From I-86 (Owego or Binghamton), also NYS Route 17: At Owego take exits 65 (via 17C) or 64 to NY Rt. 38 & 96 north. Drive about 2 miles. Turn left over bridge onto NY Rt. 96 north to Candor. In Candor, stay on Rt. 96 (NOT 96B!) "north" (actually heading west) to Spencer. In Spencer, take NY Rt. 34 to Van Etten. (It might say the direction is "south" but it's actually west.) Where Rt. 34 finally turns south in Van Etten, continue straight onto NY Rt. 224.

Drive about 5 miles to Jackson Hollow Road. Turn right onto Jackson Hollow Road. At about 2.7 miles, Jackson Hollow goes off to right, but stay on main road, which is now Van Kirk Road. After another mile, Van Kirk makes a sharp turn to the right. At that point, turn left onto Irish Hill Road. Continue about 1.2 miles to Greensprings.
