350 Day Taking Root Film Screening
Date: Saturday, October 24, 2009
Time: 8:00pm - 9:15pm
Location: Kaufman Auditorium Goldwin Smith Hall, Cornell University
Cornell's Society for Natural Resources Conservation will be hosting a screening of "Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai"! We're excited you'll be joining us for the International Day of Climate Action. Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai is the story of the growth of a woman and the grassroots movement she founded, the Green Belt Movement of Kenya. Together they have transformed their country and our understanding of the integral connections of sustainable development, ecological diversity, human rights, and democracy. Planting trees for fuel and food is not something that anyone imagined as the first step toward the NOBEL Peace Prize. FREE.

Bryan Christy Lecture: Environmental Crime, Economics, and Conservation
Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2009
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Location: Uris Hall G01, Cornell University
Bryan Christy will speak on the important but little-discussed issue of the illegal wildlife trade. Christy is author of the fascinating book, "The Lizard King: True Crimes and Passions of the World's Greatest Reptile Smugglers." The talk should appeal to a broad range of interests, addressing diverse topics such as conservation, economics, organized crime, law enforcement, environmental policy, and international affairs. According to the About the Author, "While researching this book he was bitten between the eyes by a blood python, chased by a mother alligator, sprayed by a bird-eating tarantula, and ejaculated on by a Bengal tiger." In addition to these anecdotes, Christy also has a distinguished past, including study at our very own Cornell. You can read more about him and his book at <<http://thelizardkingbook.com/>thelizardkingbook.com>. Of further note, "The Lizard King" has been optioned for a film adaptation by the director of "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Marley & Me." This event is co-sponsored and funded in part by Cornell's Sustainability Hub, KyotoNow!, and Veterinarians Interested in Developing Areas (VIDA), and Zoo and Wildlife Society (ZAWS). FREE; books by the author will be for sale For additional information, contact Sherry Martin/ 732-503-5111, <mailto:[email protected]>[email protected]
