PLEASE JOIN US AND HELP CELEBRATE OUR NEW HOME!!
Sustainable Tompkins and its affiliates, Green Resource Hub and Finger Lakes
Bioneers, invite you to join us next Thursday afternoon, November 12,
between 4:00-6:30 pm in celebration of our new home at 109 South Albany
Street. We moved into two rooms on the first floor back in late August, but
we've been too busy to stop and celebrate having a permanent downtown
location.
It has been wonderful to finally have a place to gather for our meetings,
house our staff and interns, and store our outreach materials. And its been
a real bonus to be tenants for a true "bioneer" landlord - Ian Shapiro of
Taitem Engineering. This lovely old house has been retrofitted with state
of the art energy efficient heating and cooling equipment, and everyone in
the building works together to reduce waste in all its forms. It's fun
being here, and we'd love to have you stop by and check out our new digs.
So be sure to mark your calendar for next Thursday, and remember to drop on
by to mingle with other sustainability folks, nibble on some treats, and
share a toast towards a more positive future for our community!
I look forward to seeing you here!

*Open House Set for New Office for Sustainable Tompkins, Green Resource Hub,
and Finger Lakes Bioneers*
**
ITHACA, NY – Sustainable Tompkins, Ithaca’s coalition of local citizens and
organizations working to promote a more sustainable community, will
celebrate the opening of its new office in Ithaca at 109 S. Albany St. Their
affiliates, Green Resource Hub and Finger Lakes Bioneers, will also be
housed in the office suite.
Set for Thursday, November 12, from 4-6:30 pm, the event will begin with an
official ribbon cutting followed by appetizers and refreshments. Invitees
include the many community partners of the three organizations, the Cayuga
Sustainability Council, municipal officials, and local citizens interested
in sustainability and social justice.
Sustainable Tompkins supports the local sustainability movement in many ways
including annual recognition of positive innovation via the “Signs of
Sustainability” awards. An online Sustainability Map was created to
showcase organizations facilitating adoption of more sustainable ways of
living right here in our county. Sustainable Tompkins also manages a
Neighborhood Mini-grant Program to improve the quality of life and long-term
health in our neighborhoods.
As an incubator for community sustainability projects, Sustainable Tompkins
has aided in the development of the Green Resource Hub and its Sustainable
Enterprise Network, Teachers for a Sustainable Future, Connect Ithaca,
Finger Lakes Buy Green, and the Cayuga Sustainability Council.
This year Sustainable Tompkins launched Finger Lakes Bioneers and the “We
Make Our Future" conference that was held October 16-18 on the Ithaca
College campus. Currently in development is the Finger Lakes Climate Fund to
provide funding for energy efficiency improvements in lower-income homes.
“Becoming a more sustainable community requires all of us to collaborate in
finding ways to work and live in balance with each other and Earth’s life
support systems,” said President and founder of Sustainable Tompkins, Gay
Nicholson. “We are so grateful to have this lovely space for our staff and
volunteers to gather and work together on the really wonderful initiatives
that are underway.”
The entire office building was redesigned with key sustainability features
including high-efficiency heating and lighting, Green Label carpets,
tankless water heater, and a zoned cooling system with alternative
refrigerant. Tenants in the building work cooperatively to save energy and
reduce waste through composting and avoidance of throwaway materials. Located
near The Commons on a residential street, this converted home is within
walking distance of local services and businesses.
