While I am glad to hear that Cabot will sustain damage to their bank
account for the cleanup as well as the (I almost said "restitution")
replacement of water supply to residents, I am in complete agreement that
trying to control the outcomes of a bad, and badly regulated, system is
not where we want to be. After the drilling starts is TOO LATE. I do hope
that readers of this list will consider seriously joining the call for a
ban on the drilling using high-volume, slick water hydrofracking.
Standing downwind of a fracked well with my fist raised is not where I
want to be.

Last I knew, 1324 people had signed the petition found here:
http://www.actionotsego.org/NYBanPetition.html
and a ban is now supported by 48 groups in NY.
Sign the petition, and then let people know you signed. Talk to neighbors
and to your representatives. Write to the governor. Make a noise loud
enough to be heard over the roar of frack truck engines revving to come
into NY.

In my opinion, life in Tompkins county will not be sustainable with our
land and water stolen by pollution from these companies.

Somehow, fines and lost production for Cabot don't make up for the
impacts
of a spill of this size.
We need to prevent the damage to life support systems, not just force a
few
of the externalities back onto the company causing damage.
As Donella Meadows would say, debating the rates and concentrations of
permissible ill effects is fairly powerless in controlling the outcomes
of a
bad system.
