Representatives of rich nations dismiss and attack reparations to developing
countries for damages caused by advanced industrialized nations to the
ecology and climate of the earth. The poorer nations and peoples of the
world who have not profited are bearing the brunt of these damages. Close to
home, the rising waters in Louisiana is one example. The arrogant response
of the US negotiator to the idea of reparations is a reflection of the
imperial attitude of those who have reaped enormous profits and power. The
US negotiator in Copenhagen said that “no one knew” that industrial
development would cause the ravages of climate change upon the world. In a
US court of law, those charged with a crime are told that “ignorance of the
law is no excuse.” When the laws of nature are broken, who is to hold the
guilty accountable?

--
The nonviolent approach does not immediately change the heart of the
oppressor. It first does something to the hearts and souls of those
committed to it. It gives them new self-respect; it calls up resources of
strength and courage they did not know they had.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
