Hi, Margaret. Steam to steam is commonly done. I believe Cornell
has several buildings in which central steam ("dirty" steam) is
changed via specially designed heat exchangers to "clean steam" to
heat the buildings. The "dirty" steam has various chemical additives
to prevent corrosion of the pipes, etc., whereas the "clean" steam is
sans chemicals and can be used to humidify the air, for autoclaves,
steam cleaning, heating jackets and other uses as well as heating the
