RE: Assessing the risks to drinking water from hydraulic fracturing
Dear Administrator Jackson,
We are writing to convey our strong support for Congress' request to the
Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a study on the relationship
between hydraulic fracturing and drinking water, using a credible
approach that relies on the best available science, as well as
independent sources of information. The request for this study was
included in the FY 09-10 Interior-Environment Appropriations Bill Report.
We respectfully urge the EPA to conduct this study as soon as possible
to help protect America's drinking water from the threats of hydraulic
fracturing. Many wells, either proposed or in operation, are sited on
or near drinking water supplies both from ground and surface water
resources. The results of a transparent, peer-reviewed EPA study will
help guide regulations nationwide by providing critical scientific
information on the impacts to drinking water from hydraulic fracturing.
The natural gas industry is exempt from many federal environmental
regulations, leaving a patchwork of state regulations to oversee large
scale oil and gas projects. This study is imperative to the long term
health, preservation and sustainability of our drinking water. The EPA
must undertake this study to provide guidance for states to properly
regulate the industry.
At your earliest convenience, please advise the undersigned on the
status of this study and its anticipated completion date.
Thank you for your consideration of our comments and your leadership at
the EPA.
Best Regards,
