ITHACA, NY — How do you know when your kids are actually enjoying the
homemade meal that you made just for them? When an entire cafeteria filled
with almost one hundred students is silent — at lunchtime — eating their
food. That’s when you know.

And New Roots wants to share the feast with you. Ithaca’s newest high school
is serving up a second helping of its Spaghetti Dinner, the hearty American
classic prepared by New Roots’ own head chef Allyn Rosenbaum.

On Wednesday, March 10, New Roots invites the public and greater Ithaca
community to the second annual Farm to School Benefit to support the
school’s meal program. Spaghetti Dinner will feature gluten-free pasta with
vegetarian and meat sauce; bread, butter and salad; and blueberry-apple
crisp with vanilla ice cream. Water, cider, coffee and tea will also be
served.

The New Roots Farm to School Program is a creative and interactive part of
the school day that involves students in preparing produce from local farms
for daily lunches. As part of this program, all students gain the experience
of applying academic studies to field experiences at West Haven Farm and
other sustainable farms in the region, in addition to participating in
school meal preparation and planning as part of their mentoring community
experience.

The second annual Spaghetti Dinner takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the
Women's Community Building, located in Downtown Ithaca at 100 West Seneca
Street. The all-you-can-eat buffet is $10 for general public, and $5 for
kids age six to ten. Children under the age of five can eat for free. Please
call 607-882-9220 and select extension 100 with questions.

Directly following the Spaghetti Dinner will be a Parent-Teen Information
Night, hosted at New Roots Charter School, for interested students and
families. Principal Tina Nilsen-Hodges will be joined by members of the New
Roots faculty and current student body to answer questions. The PTIN will
take place from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and registration is required. Please
register by calling 607-882-9220 and selecting extension 100.

New Roots Public Charter School opened in downtown Ithaca on September 9,
2009. It is a tuition-free public high school that is open to any student
eligible to attend high school in New York State. The school is now
enrolling 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students for the 2010-11 school year,
and there are even spaces left for students who wish to enroll in the
current academic cycle.

As a model of sustainability education at the secondary level, the New Roots
curriculum emphasizes active learning and community service. The Farm to
School meals program is a primary feature of the culture of New Roots — one
that allows students to understand intimately the relationship between human
communities and economies, ecological systems, and personal wellness. More
information about the Farm to School program is available at
http://newrootsschool.org/content/view/farm-to-school.html. Funds raised at
the Spaghetti Dinner will directly benefit the program.
