Time sure flies -- and the Earth Hour Night Ride is almost upon us!
What: A bicycle ride in the dusk, representing freedom from
carbon-producing transportation -- our observance of Earth Hour, a
worldwide turning off of lights to symbolically support action on
climate change.
What else: Before we set out we'll have some brief remarks from members
of the community and an even briefer harangue on riding safely. After
we ride a loop around the Waterfront Trail in Cass Park, we'll wind our
way through the park to State/Martin Luther King St and ride to the
Commons, where we'll assemble for some beverages and conversation.
When: Saturday, March 27. Meet at 7:45 pm, start the loop about 8:00 pm.
Who: Everybody. Those with bicycles will ride them. But, even without a
bike, the point will be the same; come down and let's mill around on a
spring evening around Ithaca's beautiful waterfront.
Where: The Turtle in Cass Park (see map: http://tinyurl.com/y9qzf4z)
It's really just some fun in the dark -- but what additional information
is available can be found on the website, http://bikeithaca.org
The weather promises to be chilly but clear and beautiful. One of the
great delights of last year's Night Ride was that it made for yet
another revelation of the beauty we live in. Most of us don't spend much
time in the parks at night, but it is a time when those public places
become a magical delight of scintillating lights above and in the water.
Gliding through this scene on a silent bicycle with only the few words
of others on the ride will be a memorable two miles of pedaling.
Since it's going to be officially (and, in some parts, really) dark,
please bring lights if you have them. We'll have a few extra lights to
lend out -- more "to be seen by" than "to see by" -- but since having
bike lights is a good idea anyway, we urge you to have your own. We will
have a bunch of red rear blinky lights to pass out, so be sure to get
one before setting off. For the post-ride ride to the Commons, we ask
that everybody have proper lighting.
