The Sustainability Hub and Collegetown ART (Art, Recycling, and Trash

Collegetown ART is hosting an art contest for public art to be
displayed on new waste receptacles located on the streets of
Collegetown. Both experienced and emerging artists in the Ithaca area
are encouraged to apply! Please visit

The Sustainability Hub is a Cornell student organization whose mission
is to promote environmental sustainability on the Cornell campus and
among Cornell students and unite other environmental organizations to
collaborate on projects relating to sustainability. Collegetown ART is
a subgroup of Sustainability Hub, focusing on waste issues in the
Collegetown area. The group has received approval to purchase new
trash and recycling cans for the Collegetown area to be installed and
maintained by the City of Ithaca. Collegetown ART’s goals are to:
reduce litter on the streets by providing conspicuous locations for disposal
divert waste from the landfill by introducing clearly labeled
recycling receptacles
promote proper waste disposal practices
beautify the streets with brightly-colored public art
foster a sense of community among students and long-term residents in
Collegetown

Project Description: Site-specific installation to be exhibited on
panels on a pair of two waste receptacles, one trash and one
recycling, at four different locations in Collegetown (shown below).
Panels measure 34.3 inches x 20.7 inches. Artists may choose to design
1 to 5 panels to be displayed on one or both of the waste receptacles
at one of the four locations in Collegetown. Accepted work will be
reproduced to fit into Plexiglass panels. Original artwork will be
professionally photographed for printing and returned to the artist.
Reproductions will be printed at cost to Collegetown ART (no cost to
artist) in high-resolution with UV resistant ink onto durable
material.

Submission Requirements: Open to both experienced and emerging artists
in the Ithaca area. The theme is open, but we ask that you keep in
mind the goals of Collegetown ART (listed above) as you create/select
your pieces. Art should be 2-dimensional, but we welcome all styles
and mediums including digital art and photography.

All applicants are required to submit:
Completed application form
Proposal of no more than 500 words describing the artwork and
depicting how the images will be placed or ordered on the waste
receptacles. For each piece please indicate whether it is new or
existing and the medium used.
Images of the proposed art (1-5 different pieces of artwork, depending
on the number of panels the artists chooses to design.
Each image must be JPG format; resolution of 72 dpi and high quality;
with a width to length ratio of 1:1.657 or about 4”x6.6” If selected
for display, artwork will be photographed again with a high quality
camera and reproduced in high resolution, at no cost to the artist.
Short artist biography/statement of interest of no more than 250 words
including any past public art experience and current occupation or
area(s) of study if a student.

Deadline: Submissions must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April
19th, 2010.

Prizes: Artists will receive a monetary prize dependent on the number
of pieces chosen for display. Prizes will be announced on our website
(http://sites.google.com/site/collegetownart) as they become
available.

Proposed Exhibit Dates: May 2010 – April 2011 (or indefinitely)

Legal Rights: The City of Ithaca reserves the right to reproduce
accepted work for promotion and archival purposes in both printed and
electronic form. The City of Ithaca will own the reproductions and
retain rights to redisplay in the future. The City of Ithaca will not
sell reproductions of the work without written consent of the
artist(s). This shall not preclude the City from using photographs of
the artwork in its promotional materials. Artist(s) shall waive
his/her rights under the Visual Arts Rights Act of 1990 and Section
14.03 of NYS Cultural Affairs Laws, to the extent that such rights
would preclude or constrain the right of the City to remove or
relocate the accepted artwork. Submission of proposal for this call
implies acceptance of all conditions herein stated.
