There is so much info flying around these days, it is hard to know what a
person can do besides spending hours reading e-mail. Signing on-line
petitions is fine, but here's another suggestion from someone who has been
to Albany frequently.

"One idea to come out of last week's visits with legislators was that *letters
to Pete Grannis* may be good now-- their take was that he has more freedom
to be thorough now that the Governor has lost clout. And, that urging a
slow, careful approach to dSGEIS will bring the next governor into the
situation with more information, no matter what the legislature decides to
do about SGEIS or individual EIS for each site. Given the recent West
Virginia mining accident, the suggestion that more effort be made to
document the risk of accidents when dealing with methane movement
underground might be a good approach."

To make your letter writing easier, here is his address and FAX number:

Pete Grannis,Commissioner
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
625 Broadway
Albany, NY 12233-0001

FAX: 518-402-8541

Other points you might include:

- You are very concerned about the growing documentation of accidents,
spills, fresh water damage, environmental degradation, etc. that is coming
from PA, West Virginia and Ohio.

- New York has the opportunity and the obligation to learn from
Pennsylvania's experience and, yes, mistakes, in failing to anticipate legal
restrictions for the technology that is new to drilling in our region.
Their legislature is now considering many new regulations based on
unanticipated problems.

- The industry itself is looking for better, greener technologies to limit
the problems of creation and disposal of toxic waste and of methane
migration that has contaminated water. In time, they may find solutions to
some of the most damaging technological methods. NY would be wise to wait
for better technology.

- Request another round of hearings and feedback comment on the next dSGEIS.
