The explanation why "oakness" doesn't appear in the FF1.5 branch, but appears in FF2 is simple:
FF1.5x didn't support the "textPath" element, but FF2 does. If you simply want to have rotated text (as with your oakness example) you can also use transformations, which work in FF1.5 as well.
