Use namespace aware methods, SVG elements are in the namespace
http://www.w3.org/2000/svg so you need to do e.g.
  var circle = document.createElementNS('http://www.w3.org/2000/svg',
'circle');
to create an element with local name 'circle' in the SVG namespace.
