I fully agree with you. This will likely become nastier while compliant SVG Mobile 1.2 implementations are made available and spread widely. Nevertheless, I guess this had to do with historical reasons, as SVG 1.1 tiny also didn't have these shapes [1] Unfortunately I didn't have the time to expose that to the SVG-WG within the 1.2 last call time limit [2]... :-| I'm not sure if there was enough debate towards possibly including such feature in SVG 1.2 Mobile, specially considering the current alternative: approximation with (potentially more than one) curves.
