To be honest, I think changing STATIC is excessive churn. The "right" fix is to use 'make DEBUG_FLAGS="-g -DDEBUG=2 -fno-inline"'. I often use 'make DEBUG_FLAGS="-g -fno-inline"' to workaround excessive inlining when debugging.
