Why do you have ~/.profile stuff leaking into rc* boot sequence? And maybe use |command| instead. $ alias rm=foo /bin/rm=foo $ rm sh: foo: not found $ /bin/rm sh: foo: not found $ command rm usage: rm [-f | -i] [-dIPRrvWx] file ... unlink file ~/.profile may also contain syntax allowed by bash e.g., $ rm() { bar; }; /bin/rm() { bar; } $ rm bash: bar: command not found $ /bin/rm bash: bar: command not found $ command rm rm: missing operand Try 'rm --help' for more information.
