You might try this: 
http://www.pipwerks.com/lab/swfobject/z-index/2.0/index.html

Basically, change wmode from "transparent" to "opaque".  There's lots of 
other benefits to that as well, as "transparent" is known to be very buggy 
(especially with ExternalInterface).
