Oops! It turns out I had accidentally modified my copy of FABridge.as in the course of debugging/experimenting.
After backing out that change, my Flex/Ajax Bridge code is working fine. Sorry for the false alarm. swfobject rocks! :-) (But y'all could still use a more straightforward F/A Bridge example IMHO. <grin>) VIncent, thanks very much for your reply. It uses an "old school" document.write() to embed the swf. But admittedly my brain is a bit fried today.
