Can I confirm that this page is working for you: http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/swfobject/testsuite_2_1/test_com.html This test page uses getObjectById in order to make external Interface calls to/from the HTML page. It should be pretty similar in terms of what you are wanting to achieve code-wise. If this page works for you, then it is something specific in your code which is unhappy.
