@Niklas. Well, Crawling images is not really useful for your SEO, so you could have some alt content which has the text you want for SEO purposes.
Run the original logic I described above and replace the original alt content with either the swf or the xml based slideshow based on what the user has... I am not familiar with SimpleXML, so I do not know the particualrs of when it kicks off it;s own loading process. You are correct that SWFObject will init and run on the DOM Ready event.
