Hi folks, this is a request from a colleague who runs my mail server...has anyone ever seen this sort of behavior? We're sort of baffled...
Cheers, -John
--- Begin Message ---The net which this (zog.net, 88.net) host runs on is currently somewhat disabled by a few Windows XP boxes which insist on broadcasting bogus UDP multicast packets out through the DSL link. I wondered if any of you had encountered similar problems in the past, and if any of you might have a solution. The host lives on my brothers' DSL in New York; he doesn't seem able/willing to diagnose and solve the problem, which unfortunately also brings down the router periodically. Basically, various hosts are broadcasting packets destined towards 224.0.1.24 (MICROSOFT-DS is the name of this destination) on port 42. The volume of traffic is typically sufficient to fill the link; although sometimes (bafflingly) only exactly 50% of available bandwidth appears to be consumed (examining MRTG graphs). The traffic consists of many small packets -- 500-800 per second, which appear to be roughly all the same in content. One of the hosts is the other side of a linksys wireless AP; not sure if this is relevant or not. Anyway -- if anyone has seen this before, I'd be interested to know what you found. cheers, Thomas -- Men of lofty genius when they are doing the least work are most active -- da Vinci gpg: pub 1024D/81FD4B43 sub 4096g/BB6D2B11=>p.nu/d 2B72 53DB 8104 2041 BDB4 F053 4AE5 01DF 81FD 4B43<<attachment: monthly.PNG>>
