Marcel,

First, it can't be in the responsibility of a Transit Carrier to block any traffic,
unless it is misrouted or black holed traffic to
protect their or the Access Carrier allocated IP ranges.

A good Swiss ISP does take care - either by calling up their customers or just cut the
line if required - if the customer systems
are going crazy, are abused heavily or the customer ignores all the warning messages.

The only key area where limited capabilities should be offered (e.g. redirecting and
limiting outgoing SMTP just as an example) are
on all the Internet-by-call options, where the end user is not known and thus
registered and bound to a contract. If you happened to
handle a big amount of SPAM or SPAM complaints - as some organizations on this list
have to - you will find that most of the ongoing
and repeatedly received SPAM traffic is coming from by-call services, as well as more
and more from completely high jacked networks.

RPC port? Sun RPC is using an RPC port (== service number) to map an PRC call the
right service, e.g. NFS... Probably not what you
want to block. Or are you really intend to limit the free traffic to http and https,
and allow SMTP (something I am promoting, too),
POP3 and IMAP4 just to the ISPs mail servers for all ADSL, SDSL, Cable-TV and dial-up
users? Good luck!

And to close this circle, why do you shout against a specific ADSL Modem supplier
model? Just because out there are enough STUPID
CUSTOMERS looking for "free modem", "free installation", "free until the next century"
there is a huge demand on low-cost
ADSL-Modem. It's hard to convince a private or SOHO to replace his near-to-new and
free device...

Finally you should not forget the probably bigger number of users connected with
similar devices to the cable TV networks, in
Switzerland and elsewhere. Hey, this again has NOTHING to do with the 630.

Again, please don't shout against M$ and ZyXEL - they are representing reasonable
market shares in this business - it wont help the
Internet community in any way. Go out and EDUCATE your friends, customers and prospect
customers on how a reasonable secure (and
network friendly in general) broadband connectivity should be set-up.

Greetz,

-Kurt.

PS. Isn't btw Genotec Internet Consulting AG to be considered as an Access Carrier?
Please start and give a good example! Start
cleaning if front of your door first. Does Genotec filter or control any traffic from
your free dial-up service? Better start now...
Humpf, even AOL gives away free ZyXEL 650 routers for new ADSL customer, at least in
Germany - trying to be good companions to their
customers and the Internet community.
