Hello Didier, Alex and list,
Yes, Bluewin people are also on the list....
| Hello, | | this is my first post. to me swinog seems to be a good list to post | my question. please correct me if i'm wrong. | | here's my question: | | On Monday the TTL for www.juraworld.com has been changed to 1h on | ns1.lan.ch and ns2.lan.ch. Today ist has been changed to 15min as | we're getting ready to move servers. | | Yet, dns2.bluewin.ch doesn't reflect this TTL. Has anyone an idea | how bluewins dns are setup? Bluewin support gave me an almost | unbelievable answer: "dns2 is only backup and updated every 14 days | from dns1"
Well thats Bluewin Support ;-)
To your questions - - Our DNS Servers are bind 9 - - we have an option "max-cache-ttl 172800;" ~ which makes our caches keeping records for 3 days maximum in the cache.
- - They are updated for authoritative zones by notification (read immediatly) - - The cache works as a cache works.... It keeps the record as long as the RR TTL tells it to do ( if the TTL is lower than 3 days - see above, or the entry gets cleaned up earlier du to limited chache memory)

Further Information:
- - You could find a responsible person by issuing
~ $ dig bluewin.ch SOA @195.186.1.110 | awk ' /^bluewin.ch.*SOA/ {
mail = sub( /\./, "@", $6); sub ( /.$/, "", $6 ); print $6 }'
~ Or in other words: The second field in an SOA record is an email
~ address for domain administration issues.
~ Some, many, most? companies or otherwise responsible read emails
~ sent to these addresses.- - I checked the domain today and it's okay now. ~ (8 Servers checked, all give the new IP 212.117.196.59 back)
- - Questions to you (Didier): ~ * When did you make the change for the domain? ~ * When were all authoritave name servers up to date? ~ * was the delegation for the domain changed at Network Solutions ~ and if so, when? ~ (I know there are other registrars; this domains is NSI ~ registered and NSI whois doesn't show "last change" dates ~ for domains any more :-( )

In that case, I don't know why the A RR for www.juraworld.com | is still in the cache of dns2.bluewin.ch. | |> I also find it strange that dns2 is giving me all the root-server |> as glue. | | | I think that it just didn't happen to have the glue for | juraworld.com. in its cache, so it returned the glue for the | GTLD-servers instead (not the root servers). After querying it for | the NS records for that domain, it now reports the expected glue | (at least until those records expire) | | ; <<>> DiG 9.4.0s20040114055632 <<>> @dns2.bluewin.ch
nice version of dig ;-) especially if the last "known" Snapshot is bind-9.3.0s20021217.tar.gz.
also waiting for bind 8.4.4 or 8.4.5 "will be released shortly" (whatever is first ...)
