There are similarities. Geocaches are often found along orienteering courses.

With a good topo map and serious compass, you could probably get yourself close 
enough to a cache to have a good chance of finding it.

Still, the lure of using billions of dollars worth of satellites to find a 
Tupperware tub in the woods is  what makes geocaching so much fun.

Skip, would you consider orienteering related to geocaching?

The Philly area is considered the North American nexus (!) of
orienteering, and there's an orienteering course at nearby French
Creek state park.  Yes, that French Creek.
