How about this for ironic... Philly is putting in all this WiFi citywide so you can connect "seamlessly", but they recently discovered that the police radio comms are being received by a digital scanner and streamed on the web from a server outside their juristiction. Now there is serious consideration being given to an ordinance banning mobile use laptop computers! Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of wiring up the city? This harkens back to the days when Frank Rizzo(may he rest in peace), was informed that the police radio comms could be picked up by joe average citizen on a multi-band portable radio(this is before scanners), sold over the counter at Radio Shack, Sears and other retail outlets. Supposedly he attempted to have their sale and posession banned within the city limits even in the privacy of ones residence. There was no exception made for legitimate "radio hobbiests", like hams or swls and when the cb craze hit in the 1970s he tried a similar ban on cb use also. Scanners were later added to this and the ban included vhf / uhf ham gear even those rigs that could only receive inside the ham bands. What is old is new again... CRAIG

That is interesting. However, not sure how much coverage there is around the country for WiFi or WiMAX. Philly is going WiFi and Baltimore / Washington is adding WiMAX so we will have some coverage. But you're right, Sid...it's what I already manage with podcasts and downloaded audio. Seeing the WSJ take general notice of the phenomenon is noteworthy...it's been a while since they took on shortwave...
